Thursday April 30th #LaughterSpreadsFaster

Greetings my Directors Of The Bored,

Let’s dive right in because there’s a load of good stuff to get through.

First today People Are Amazing.

I admit the reason for that is Captain Tom, or, as I should say now, Colonel Tom!

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Truthfully, if I’m going to write about anyone turning 100 on the day of a blog, I’m going to do it at the top because when you’re turning 100, the sheer excitement of the moment alone could be enough to switch it from happiness to tragedy in one fell swoop. As could having to try and blow out all your candles. You’re very much in the category of not buying ripen-in-the-bowl bananas in case they turn out to be a waste.

Hopefully though, Captain Tom, having lapped his garden every day to raise money for the NHS, is as fighting fit as anyone his age. He actually looks in better shape than Prince Philip.

First of the honours bestowed upon Tom today is that he’s been promoted from Captain to Colonel.

Fabulous. I’m not sure that’ll be the last, either. We’ll see.

Tom’s received over 125,000 birthday cards, which is another reason he’s agile, bending down to pick all those up off the doormat, and says he has everything he needs, BUT, you can still send a virtual card via social media #CardForTom

At some point today there’s going to be a flypast of Tom’s house. Details are sketchy because there’s fear crowds may gather to watch, but guaranteed you’ll see it all over the news and social media later, so stay at home.

And if you want to read more about Tom on his big day, you’ll find it here.

Tom’s family are lucky to have him, and he them. Not every old soul is as fortunate, so how about you become one of the folk we highlight in this section every day by Adopting A Grandparent.

The charity in question sets you up with an elderly person in the community you then either write to or phone on a regular basis. Lovely.

Next, I loved this news.

The Useful

Congratulations to our PM and his wife-to-be on the birth of their boy. Why is this useful? Well, until they officially announce a name, we can have a sweeper, and kill a bit of Lockdown time.

To help you out with a clue or two, these are the names of his children to date.

Lara Lettice Johnson, Cassia Peaches Johnson, Theodore Apollo Johnson and Milo Arthur Johnson.

And these are the latest odds from Ladbrokes:

Wilfred 5/1
George 8/1
Thomas 8/1
Arthur 10/1
Harry 12/1
Oliver 12/1
Winston 12/1
Charlie 16/1
David 16/1
Jack 16/1
Lucius 16/1
Michael 16/1
Stanley 16/1
Jacob 25/1
Jeremy 25/1
Joseph 25/1
Oscar 25/1
Sebastian 25/1
Luis 33/1
John 50/1
Karl 50/1
Keir 50/1
Matthew 50/1
Terrance 50/1
Boris Jnr 100/1
Donald 100/1
Kim 100/1
Sajid 100/1
Tyson 100/1
Vladimir 250/1

Surely Winston’s got to be a good shout at 12/1? Then you team that up with a piece of fruit or veg and Bob’s your Uncle. Well, actually in this case, Leo and Jo are your Uncle, but you get my point. I’m going with Winston Artichoke Johnson. Fingers crossed.

Here’s a killing time through Lockdown tactic number 2 for today.

Rightmove published statistics last month which showed people physically viewing homes is at zero, as you’d expect, because of Lockdown, but, by contrast their online viewing numbers are through the roof, presumably with those who would be potential buyers in a normal time, plus those who are stone cold bored. But there is something to be said for wiling away the afternoon having a gander at how the other half live.

How about this for £7.5 million.

I think you could argue it down a bit. Some of that roofing looks a bit shoddy.

Got more of that type of thing here.

This next one is interesting – the fitness app that lets you train for an apocalypse.

You’ll run, do circuits and yoga workouts, but it’s all woven into an audio story where you’re a secret agent trying to save London from an alien invasion.

No gym or specialist equipment required. Sounds pretty good.

Its founder Adele Anderson says “When we make exercise escapist by engaging people mentally and emotionally as well as physically, we see much better and long term physical and mental health outcomes.”

OK, now I’ve done that one, I feel a whole lot better about this next bit.

Wagamamas have released the recipe for their Chicken Katsu Curry!

Looks like they’re doing a whole bunch of these. Yum.

Things That Make You Go Awwwwww

When Jade and her sister Georgia found out they were pregnant at the same time with due dates 2 days apart, they thought it would be a fantastic experience, and then the Coronavirus Pandemic struck, and all plans of joint baby showers and celebrations were scrapped.

They’ve still to get together properly since the birth of both babies. This was how they all met for the first time.

You can read their full story here.

It’s time for The Funnies

Today’s News In Brief

Let’s play out with some music.

I have to declare an interest in this next one. It’s a video put together by some of my pals. They’ve just won an award for the best breakfast radio show in the UK, and this kind of thing is why. Because they always go the extra mile…..

Thanks for reading.

Stay safe x

I've been on the radio for almost 30 years (not continuously!) and am a media bloke entrenched in one of the loveliest parts of the world. I present radio shows for Global on Smooth Radio, run an audio media company - Mellis Media - and I also work for Aberdeen Football Club and write for a number of local media outlets. But that's work. My life and passions revolve around my wife, Lynne, and our kids, Joshua and Gracie. I’m a dog father to Ernie.
