Thursday 19th March #LaughterSpreadsFaster

Day 3 of the Blog, and to be honest, I’m no different from you. We’re living in unprecedented times. Genuinely, every single day, history is being made when steps are taken, measures are introduced which have never been seen before.

Even in World War 2, schools remained open. Children were moved to less populated areas for their own safety to avoid the worst of the bombing, but their schooling continued. Back then of course the enemy could be shot down and neutralised. This is an exceptional kind of foe. So the schools break up tomorrow. This has generated a mixed response.

As I understand it, the plan (such as it is) is for pupils to continue working from home accessing online materials. Good luck with that. I spat out a full mouthful of coffee when I heard it first.

The BBC announced a full and wide-ranging package explaining how it’s attempting to educate, entertain and inform throughout the Coronavirus period. This from a body which was being slaughtered from all sides a matter of weeks ago as politicians and phone-ins set about deciding how best to break it up. Auntie didn’t take offence. Instead, she’s stepped up to the plate. Like always. The Beeb should be applauded. Maybe one flaw here though.

However, in Breaking News…..

As we stumble through this era together, socially distant, constantly hand-washing and not touching our faces, the fog’s begun to lift on certain aspects of society. I prefer to focus on the positive, which is this.

People. Are. Amazing.

All you have to do for some is give them the opportunity. This, from Highland League club Nairn County yesterday, genuinely brought a tear to my eye.

Watch in the coming days – other football clubs, some much bigger are already playing catch up.

Ex footballers are getting in on the act too.

I really liked this local example.

And the stars are getting involved worldwide. John Legend played a gig online from his house. #TogetherAtHome

Really, cool stuff is taking place wherever you look, because….People. Are. Amazing.

I don’t want to pass up the opportunity to mention those who aren’t famous, and possibly never will be, but whose contribution is pivotal right now and throughout the coming weeks. Those in the health and emergency services. People in local communities up and down this country and around the world who are going over and above, making huge personal sacrifices for the common good. We see you. You inspire us to be better.

Thank you.

Of course, our little bit on Sociable Distance is to try and make laughs spread faster and for longer than Coronavirus. We want you to get involved. Record yourself on your phone telling a joke or story, or something that’ll make us laugh, and we’ll send it around the world to do its job. Doing that for us today is our pal, Grant Stott. And joining him on the virtual stage are Ellen DeGeneres, David Blaine and Jimmy Kimmel.

Briefly, in other news….

And finally, well done to the supermarkets opening early today specifically for the elderly and vulnerable.

I was the one at the side of Sainsbury’s main door yelling “CHEEEEEEAAAAAAAATTTTTS”

Thanks for reading, and remember to record me your joke or fun story so we can send that giggle around the world. #LaughterSpreadsFaster

I've been on the radio for almost 30 years (not continuously!) and am a media bloke entrenched in one of the loveliest parts of the world. I present radio shows for Global on Smooth Radio, run an audio media company - Mellis Media - and I also work for Aberdeen Football Club and write for a number of local media outlets. But that's work. My life and passions revolve around my wife, Lynne, and our kids, Joshua and Gracie. I’m a dog father to Ernie.
